Ofgem proposes ban on `unfair` bills
25/03/2009
Energy industry regulator Ofgem has set out plans to ban energy companies from charging `unjustified` prices to customers.
The new rules, which Ofgem claims will `give consumers more power and help to seal the flaws in the retail market`, will ban `unjustified price differences`, such as charging significantly more for a pre-payment meter than for a direct debit.
Energy companies will now be required to price each of their products in line with how much it costs them.
A spokesperson for Debt Advisers Direct commented: "Ofgem`s proposal could help to ensure that prices are always in line with wholesale costs. Many analysts have argued that energy providers were slow to react to falling wholesale costs at the beginning of this year, and many billpayers have been at a higher risk of debt than usual because of unprecedented high prices.
"In the meantime, anyone struggling with their existing costs should contact a professional debt adviser to discuss their situation."
