Fuel tax to rise by almost 2p a litre

24/03/2009

Fuel tax is set to rise once again by almost 2p a litre, bringing the level of tax paid by motorists to 71p in every pound spent on fuel, according to Petrolprices.com.

The rise - which will come into effect on April 1st - follows an increase of 2p a litre on fuel duty in December, to help offset the 2.5% reduction in VAT.

During Prime Minister`s Questions in July 2008, Gordon Brown had promised not to raise fuel duty for a year.

A spokesperson for Debt Advisers Direct said: "Last year`s freeze on fuel duty came at a time when many people needed it, with increasing numbers being pushed towards debt due to high costs of living.

"Although petrol prices have significantly reduced since then, many people who are still in a difficult financial position may suffer as prices start to rise."
