Council in Devon writes off nearly £500,000 of debts

South Hams Council has been forced to write off nearly half a million pounds in debt: a year`s worth of unpaid council tax, business rates and rents.

In the three months leading up to the end of 2008, the Council agreed to write off £70,000 of debt, bringing the annual total to £475,000.

According to a council spokesperson, the debts are council tax and business rates owed by people who have either died or gone bankrupt - or have simply "run off and cannot be found".

As the Insolvency Service website reports, there were over 15,000 company liquidations in England and Wales last year - and over 106,000 individual insolvencies.
