PC sales `may be hit by economic downturn`
09/03/2009
New research has suggested that PC sales in 2009 will fall at the fastest rate since they hit the market, as consumers look to cut back on `non-essential` spending and avoid getting into debt.
Information technology research company Gartner predicted that 257 million PCs will be sold this year, down 11.9% compared with 2008 figures. The steepest fall so far was 3.2% in 2001.
George Shiffler, principal analyst at Gartner, commented: "The PC industry is facing extraordinary conditions and as the global economy continues to weaken, users stretch PC lifetimes and PC suppliers grow increasingly cautious."
A spokesperson for Debt Advisers Direct said: "PC sales could be hit on two counts as the economic downturn continues. Many people are currently unwilling to make big purchases, and there are also people who cannot obtain the necessary credit to fund such purchases.
"In times like this, consumers should think carefully about making any purchases on credit. Credit purchases are a form of debt, and it`s as important as ever that people ensure that they will be able to afford their repayments."
