Women `less likely to get into debt`
09/03/2009
Women are more financially responsible than men and less likely to get into debt, according to an international survey.
The global Reuters Synovate survey questioned around 4,500 women in 12 countries, while an equal number of men were asked similar financial questions.
It seems that nearly half the women - and almost 60% of the men - thought that women were bigger spenders than men.
On average, though, just over half of the people questioned agreed that women were more responsible with money than men (and in Mexico, 72% thought women were better at handling finances).
And while over 40% of women spend part of their monthly income paying off credit cards, about 70% acknowledged that having multiple cards could lead to debt.
"It`s obviously not the card itself that causes anyone to use it. So the statement is really about control and temptation," said Claire Braverman, senior vice president of Financial Services in the United States for international market research firm Synovate, as quoted in Reuters.
"The ability to spend more, that you don`t have in the first place, can certainly lead to debt," she continued.
Almost 60% of women saw themselves as financially independent, which for a third meant living debt-free.
