8% spending over half their income on unsecured debt payments
19/02/2009
8% of UK adults are spending more than half of their income on payments to their unsecured debts, according to a survey carried out by YouGov at the end of December.
This figure stood at 6% in August 2008, and just 2% in August 2007.
For 25-34 year olds, the increase is even more noticeable: in August 2008, just 6% of people in this age range were spending more than half their income on their unsecured debt repayments, but by December this figure had risen to 12%.
Furthermore, over two thirds of adults are more concerned about their finances than they were a year ago. 45% expect their financial situation to deteriorate over the next year, while just 19% expect it to improve.
Yet people in the 25-34 year-old group are more likely to be optimistic than other adults, with 31% expecting things to improve.
The latest figures from the Bank of England (December 2008) show that total unsecured personal debt in the country stood at £233 billion.
