Petrol down 16.5%; gas up 50%
27/01/2009
The cost of unleaded petrol has dropped by 16.5% in the last year, according to the AA – but certain other costs are much higher than they were 12 months ago.
The Daily Mail’s ‘Cost of Living Index’ tracks the cost of various expenses, from supermarket goods to petrol and mortgages.
It notes that unleaded petrol has dropped 16.5% in the last year, that diesel is down 9.5% and that ‘the annual rate of increase on shopping basket staples is at its lowest for nine months’.
Energy bills, however, remain ‘punishingly high’: electricity prices are around 30% higher than this time last year and gas prices are up a full 50%.
“The recent fall in petrol prices has come as a great relief,” said a debt management expert for Gregory Pennington, “but people all over the country will be waiting to see more energy suppliers announce cuts to their prices. Last year’s increases put a significant strain on many households’ finances, making it extremely hard for them to avoid getting into debt – or further into debt.”
