13% ‘have sought debt advice’
13/01/2009
13% of UK adults have sought debt advice, new research indicates – but just over half of those who are “very concerned” about their debts have not looked for debt advice.
With the UK’s personal debt standing at around £1.5 trillion, research from MoneyExpert.com has revealed that 30% of people questioned were concerned about their own personal debt.
“We always stress the importance of seeking debt advice in time,” said a spokesperson for Debt Advisers Direct. “In general, the sooner someone looks for debt advice, the simpler it should be for them to bring their debts under control.
“So on the one hand, it’s good to see so many people looking for help with their debt problems – but it is alarming to note that 51% of the ‘very concerned’ respondents still hadn’t asked for debt advice.
“Of course, debt advice in itself isn’t always going to be enough. Many borrowers may find they could significantly improve their financial situation through a professional debt solution – a debt management plan, for example, or a debt consolidation loan. The important thing is to talk to a professional debt expert before they commit themselves to anything.”
