Brits `gearing up for January sales`
24/12/2008
Almost half of British shoppers plan to hit the January sales in 2009 in the hunt for a bargain, according to new figures.
Data from Halifax found that 48 per cent hope to bag a bargain in the new year, compared with 39 per cent who splashed out in January 2008.
Over one-quarter (26 per cent) of consumers expect to spend more in the 2009 sales than they did this year, while 35 per cent intend to spend the same. In 2008, the average consumer spent £112.40 in the January sales, Halifax said.
However, there are signs that the biting economy and worries about debt management will keep some shoppers at home. Half of those who bought items in January 2008 will not be spending this time around.
Of these, 70 per cent said it was because their personal finances are too tight, while 54 per cent said they are concerned about their future money situation.
Halifax said shoppers can avoid overspending if they make a list, stick to a budget, shop online and compare prices beforehand.
