Fewer Christmas shoppers on high street
23/12/2008
New figures have shown that the final weekend before Christmas saw a drop in shoppers hitting the high street compared with last year.
The weekend is traditionally the busiest of the year, as consumers look to finalise their Christmas shopping. However, this year the weekend saw an 8.7% decrease in the number of shoppers on the high street, compared with last year’s levels.
The figures may coincide with online shopping levels leading up to the Christmas period – which showed an unexpected rise on last year’s figures – as consumers attempt to avoid falling into debt by shopping with cheaper online retailers.
A spokesperson for Debt Advisers Direct said: “It was to be expected that high street sales would be down this year, as we are in an unusually difficult situation for the economy. Many people are looking to avoid debt by searching harder for the lowest prices, many of which are online.
“Nonetheless, there will still be some households who struggle. Our advice to anyone who does fall into debt is to contact a professional debt adviser as soon as possible.”
