Debt problems could lead to a gloomy Christmas

Debt might be a national problem, but some areas are affected more than others. The Harrow Observer reports on the town’s particular debt problems.
‘Personal debt, repossession and unemployment rates have rocketed in Harrow as residents prepare for one of the most frugal Christmases in decades’, the paper states.
22.8% of working-age adults in the borough are out of work, while nearby Uxbridge County Court saw repossession orders rise by 54% in the third quarter of the year.
Debt problems are affecting everything from shopping to relationships, with local retailers using words such as ‘quiet’ and ‘tough’ – and Hazel Hewett of relationship support charity Relate stating: “We have seen many cases of credit card debts getting out of control and relationships will be tested to their limits in these circumstances.”
“In so many cases,” a spokesperson for Debt Advisers Direct said, “people in debt are simply facing too many financial challenges, from rising utility bills to falling incomes. In the run-up to an expensive period like Christmas, it’s particularly important they seek expert debt advice and take steps to tackle their debt problems before they grow any further.”
