Free debt advice – a Government promise
04/12/2008
In its Pre-Budget Report, the Government has promised to make sure people struggling with debt have access to the free debt advice they need.
Government website Direct.gov.uk now contains a page called ‘Pre-Budget Report 2008 – helping people in financial difficulty’. In the ‘Debt advice services’ section, it states that:
‘The government is committed to ensuring that any family facing debts which they can’t manage can access free impartial debt advice to help them get back on track.
‘The Pre-Budget Report announced additional government funding of £5.85 million for an extension of telephone advice services, and £10 million to extend face-to-face advice services, to ensure everyone has access to free debt advice when they need it’.
The Pre-Budget Report itself informs readers that: ‘The Government is committed to providing additional support for those facing financial difficulties in order to help protect households against repossessions. Individuals can expect [among other things] … access to high quality information and independent debt advice at the earliest possible opportunity.’
