People with children `have higher debt levels`
28/11/2008
Adults who have had children are more indebted than their childless counterparts, it has been suggested.
According to figures produced by Scottish Widows, the average household with dependent children has £88,500 still outstanding on its mortgage, compared with £77,500 for those which do not.
In addition, adults with dependent offspring carried over an average of £9,359 in short-term debt over the last three months, compared with an average of £7,223 for consumers without such responsibilities.
Meanwhile, the study also discovered that 47 per cent of households have to rely on more than one breadwinner for money.
"The reliance on two incomes is the only way to maintain a decent standard of living for many families and, with the rising cost of living, this isn`t likely to ease off any time soon," stated Scottish Widows` protection market director Richard Jones.
Meanwhile, Richard Marett, chief executive officer of Whizz.com, recently suggested that a lack of mathematical ability can result in consumers getting into debt problems as they fail to understand high interest rates and the effects of compound growth.
