Unemployment `on the up`
13/11/2008
The number of people without work in the UK is increasing, new figures suggest.
Produced by the Office for National Statistics, they reveal that the rate of unemployment now stands at 5.8 per cent.
According to the organisation, this represents a rise of 0.4 per cent from the previous quarter - potentially meaning more people are experiencing financial difficulties such as rising debt.
In total, there are now thought to be 1.82 million people out of work across the country, an increase of 182,000 compared with the end of last year.
The areas in which the most job cuts occurred included hotels and restaurants, finance and business services.
Recently, Mark Sands, director of personal insolvency at professional services firm KPMG, said that rising unemployment - combined with increased credit restrictions - is causing a surge in the number of IVAs and bankruptcies.
He said: "We expect that by the end of 2008, personal insolvencies will reach up to 110,000."
