AA urges public wholesale petrol prices
07/11/2008
The AA (Automobile Association) has urged the Government to publish tables of wholesale petrol prices in an attempt to encourage fairer pricing.
The Association says that such a move would serve to expose profiteering. Australia introduced a similar scheme after a competition watchdog’s investigation.
Edmund King, president of the AA, said: “As a nation, whether we like it or not, we are dependent on diesel and petrol. It affects commerce and mobility. This is a crucial national issue and there ought to be more transparency”.
The price of petrol has been a hot topic in recent months, as 2008 saw rapid rises to a peak of 119.7 pence per litre on average in July, followed by a gradual drop to 97.3 pence per litre on average at the time of writing.
But with the maximum price of unleaded petrol still standing at 114 pence per litre (www.petrolprices.com), there are some concerns that the full benefits of falling oil prices are not always passed on to consumers.
A spokesperson for Debt Advisers Direct said: “At their peak, petrol prices were a real burden for many drivers, and although they have come down significantly, oil prices have fallen far enough for petrol to become cheaper still.
“The AA’s suggestion would improve transparency with regard to pricing, and the resulting price pressure could reduce the financial pressure on drivers and potentially lessen the number of drivers falling into debt.”
