Christmas savings schemes `good way to stay debt free`

03/11/2008

Investing in a Christmas savings scheme is a good way of remaining debt free over the festive season, it has been suggested.

Commenting on the issue, Rob Scott of the Post Office Christmas Club said that people put money in such schemes to help them budget for the event and to prevent them from overspending and relying on credit.

He commented: "It is about the convenience - you know your money is locked away each year and you can spend those funds in the best way possible at certain retailers to give your family a great Christmas."

Mr Scott added that a lot of people are nervous about running up debts over the festive season.

Indeed, research conducted by YouGov found that a quarter of people questioned across the UK reported feeling anxious about how they will pay for Christmas, while one in five admitted they get into debt because of overspending at that time of year.
