Supermarket petrol price war heats up
24/10/2008
All four major supermarkets today announced petrol price cuts, adding further fuel to the ‘price war’ that recently saw prices fall below a pound per litre for the first time in a year.
Asda and Sainsbury’s announced that they would be selling unleaded petrol for as little as 94.9 pence per litre, while Tesco and Morrisons said they would also reduce their prices. Petrol company Total has also joined the list.
The news will be a further boost to drivers, many of whom had been pushed towards debt over the last year by petrol prices that reached a peak of 119.7 pence per litre in July.
A spokesperson for Debt Advisers Direct commented: “Petrol prices falling below 95p is another milestone and will come as a relief to the many drivers pushed towards debt by fuel costs.
“But petrol prices are still quite high in real terms compared with previous years, and some people may still be struggling. We advise anyone who does find themselves struggling with debt to seek expert debt advice.”
