Charity calls for more action to help struggling pensioners

23/10/2008

Charity Age Concern has called on the government to provide greater financial assistance to pensioners struggling with their personal finances.

According to the organisation, as the cost of living increases, such people are facing mounting pressures on their money, potentially meaning they may end up with debt problems.

Director general of Age Concern Gordon Lishman said: "With over two million pensioners living below the poverty line and thousands more struggling to pay basic household bills, it`s clear that current measures to lift pensioners out of poverty are falling pitifully short of the mark."

He went on to suggest that the government should be working harder to ensure that the £5 billion in unclaimed benefits for pensioners gets to the people who need it.

Figures released recently by the Alliance Trust Research Centre suggested that the rate of inflation for the elderly has hit a six-year high of 7.8 per cent.
