"Private renters slipping into arrears"
11/08/2008
There has been an increase in the number of people facing rent arrears, Axa research has revealed.
A total of 13 per cent of UK private renters have found themselves in arrears in the past 12 months. Seven per cent of these have hit debt problems in the past three months.
The research, carried out for the insurer by YouGov, also found half of those questioned were worried about paying their rent in the future and 95 per cent of private renters have no income protection in case their income ceased.
Mike Keating, managing director of personal lines intermediary at the group – citing figures from Association of Residential Letting Agents – said: "While rental rates appear to have dropped marginally in the last few months it`s going to continue to be tough for many tenants."
This is due to the cost of living rising faster than average earnings, he explained.
In related news, Skelmersdale council has said arrears from council property tenants have risen recently, according to the Ormskirk Advertiser.
