Take note of credit information to beat fraudsters
31/07/2008
British consumers have been urged to keep an eye on their credit information to avoid getting into debt, as application fraud rises by 47 per cent.
According to Equifax, citing Cifas, the UK`s Fraud Prevention Service, the first six months of 2008 saw cases of application fraud where new finance was granted almost double.
The identities of innocent people may have been used to commit the fraud, leading to fears of good credit ratings turned bad by criminals.
Neil Munroe, external affairs director of the group said the "unseen crime" nature of identity fraud means people do not realise they have been targeted until the damage has been done.
"More often than not you don`t know you have been a victim until you are rejected for credit or you receive a letter from a debt collector," he said.
Worried consumers have been advised to pay attention to their credit information using monitoring services such as those available from the company.
