Energy efficiency could help freeze out debt
30/07/2008
Those worried about how escalating household bills may translate to debt problems may want to look at how energy-saving appliances could also save money.
According to the Energy Saving Trust, households accounted for 35.4 per cent of energy used in 2006. In the UK, £1.3 billion is spent powering washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers per year, while a further £1.5 billion goes on energy for fridges and freezers.
Choosing energy-efficient models of cold appliances could save the UK £700 million a year, according to the Energy Saving Trust (EST). The savings could also be noticed in consumers` wallets.
Caroline Rams of the EST said: "Replacing an old, energy inefficient fridge-freezer with a new energy saving recommended one could save you up to £34 every year."
The advice comes after energy provider EDF announced its customers would see a 17 per cent increase on gas bills and a 22 per cent hike for electricity. It was also revealed by Legal & General this week that the number of people whose income exceeds their outgoings is getting smaller.
