Holidaymakers should be aware of theft
28/07/2008
People going on holiday this year have been urged to keep an eye on their belongings after nine per cent of British people said they had had their purse or wallet stolen abroad, according to Tesco Personal Finance.
Young travellers in particular have been warned about the dangers of thieves on holiday – 23.8 per cent of those aged 18 and under have been targeted by pickpockets and thieves, according to the research.
The figures also indicated hotel room locks and deposit boxes are not always safe, with seven per cent of respondents having had items stolen from them.
For those without insurance, theft could leave a hole in travel finances which could translate to debt on return to the UK.
Additionally, Tesco found nearly 63 per cent of holidaymakers do not set daily budgets for spending.
To address the conclusions, the supermarket has launched a travel money card that is not linked to bank accounts, leaving them safe if the card is stolen.
