Credit card firms `must provide refunds`
09/01/2008
The House of Lords has ruled that credit card companies must refund people who use their cards abroad to buy goods that are undelivered or damaged.
Appeals from Lloyds TSB and Tesco Personal Finance against a previous ruling were dismissed by five law lords who ruled that all companies must provide refunds for circumstances which are beyond the control of customers.
A number of consumers claimed that goods which they had bought abroad or over the internet should be refunded. The ruling could help out those consumers currently experiencing credit card debt.
John Fingleton, chief executive of the Office of Fair Trading, told the BBC: "It confirms that credit card issuers are individually and jointly liable with suppliers if a consumer has a valid claim against the supplier for misrepresentation or breach of contract."
Recent research by Moneyexpert found that 2.6 million Brits are considering changing their credit cards during January.
