Christmas Eve spending `up on 2006`

24/12/2007

Consumers in the UK are set to spend more during this year`s Christmas rush than they did last year, according to new research.

Figures from Sainsbury`s Bank indicate that shoppers will spend £1.5 million per minute on Christmas Eve, with around 18 per cent of this being spent on credit cards.

The study also shows that 46 per cent of adults intend to do some shopping on the day before Christmas.

Donald MacLeod, head of cards at Sainsbury`s Bank, remarked: "It looks like the shops are going to be busy on Christmas Eve as a lot of people intend to do a significant part of their shopping then."

He added that the December 24th spend looks like it is going to be "considerably up" on last year.

Perhaps in relation to the Christmas spending rush, Equifax said last week that more people look to debt consolidation in January than any other month of the year.
