Festive foreign trips `sting credit card users`
12/12/2007
The majority of Brits spending Christmas in a foreign country this year will be stung by high charges for using their credit card abroad, new research shows.
Many consumers may experience credit card debt on their return to the UK, as the typical charge for using a card abroad is 2.75 per cent, the Post Office has found.
With 17 per cent of UK consumers planning on spending the festive season in foreign places, professional debt advice is likely to be sought by many in the new year. Research suggests that many may have a "financial hangover" when they return.
Post Office director of lending Gary Fitton said: "With 49 per cent of UK holidaymakers planning to use their credit card when shopping abroad, many people could be returning from their Christmas break with a lot more than just `memories and mementoes` due to hidden card charges."
The average Briton will spend £400 on presents this Christmas, research from Halifax has stated.
