Credit cards `can protect against online fraud`

Consumers shopping online have been warned to only use credit cards when spending over £100, due to the extra protection they give from fraud.

An expert at Consumer Direct has claimed that, although many people may use debit cards in an attempt to avoid credit card debt, for large purchases credit cards can offer better protection against illegal activities online.

Online shoppers should always be aware of the risks of buying goods over the internet and they should never let their guard down, a spokesman for the company warned. He suggested that the normal internet safety steps should be followed.

He added: "Use security software and keep it up to date. Look for a padlock symbol on the screen or the https in the website title, which will tell that you`re on a secure site."

Nearly a third of all UK online shoppers spend over £1,000 at internet stores, according to the Office of Fair Trading.
