Britons `go into debt to attend weddings`

22/06/2007

Britons spend hundreds of pounds to attend the weddings of their friends and family, sometimes even going into debt, a new study reveals.

Some six per cent of people in the UK admit that they have gone into debt from the expense of other people`s weddings, the data from CreditExpert indicates.

This figure rises to nine per cent in London, the study reveals.

Jim Hodgkins, managing director of CreditExpert, remarked that young people with existing debts are hit the hardest in these types of situations.

"The cost of getting married and attending other people`s weddings is often underestimated, but it`s a significant outlay that often hits hardest those who are first-time property buyers or those still burdened by student debt," he said.

"As a result, attending lots of weddings in a short space of time can mean your credit rating is adversely affected."

The average cost of a wedding for those who are getting married in the UK is £11,000, according to WeddingGuideUK.com.
