New warning over hidden charges abroad
27/05/2008
Users of credit or debit cards overseas have been warned to be wary of the charges that may be applied.
According to reports by the Guardian, credit and debit cards are an increasingly popular choice for British travellers, but there are often charges which could contribute more than they expect to their credit card debt.
Nationwide, however, does not impose charges for using either its credit or debit card outside the UK.br/>
Among the charges which can be applied to a transaction is a fee for currency conversion, which may be between 2.75 per cent and 2.99 per cent.
It is also possible that a customer may be charged for withdrawing money from a cash machine.
"Taking cash out on your credit card is never advisable, even in the UK, as not only is the interest rate much higher than on purchases, but you will be charged the interest from day one," said Michelle Slade, an analyst from Moneyfacts.co.uk.
Nationwide was established in 1884.
