Repossessions `can happen quickly`

03/04/2008

Houses can, in some cases, be repossessed a mere three months after creditors send the first warning, according to a major trade body.

As the number of people applying for bankruptcy increases, the amount of repossessions - due to not keeping up with mortgage repayments - is also set to increase, the Repossessions Advice Centre (RAC) stated.

It claims that banks and lenders are clamping down on those unable to pay mortgage instalments and will act quickly.

However, David Warnes, director of the RAC, said courts will look to help those being repossessed.

Mr Warnes added: "The courts have an understanding that if they can mediate and keep people in their homes then that`s what they will try and do."

A recent study by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors predicted that 123 homes a day will be repossessed in 2008.
