Homeowners `risk bankruptcy with lack of insurance`
24/01/2008
Almost one in every five homeowners have not taken out any building insurance policies - a decision which could lead to bankruptcy if severe damage occurs to their property, new research suggests.
Nearly a quarter of those polled by Nationwide said that they had insurance but were unsure what it actually covered them for.
The research found that 21 per cent estimate the contents of their house to be worth between £10,000 and £20,000 - a total which uninsured could lead towards bankruptcy trying to replace.
Nationwide`s insurance director Robin Bailey said: "It is surprising that so many people are prepared to take such a gamble on their homes and personal belongings when you consider how much time and money we all invest in our homes.
"You never know what is around the corner and for that reason, it is vital that people are prepared by having adequate insurance."
Recent research from Abbey found that the recent storms caused one in ten homeowners to consider claiming on contents insurance.
