Serious Crime Bill aims to tackle fraud
31/10/2007
A new law which gives police powers to crack down on serious organised crime will save UK customers millions of pounds, according to a financial expert.
The Serious Crime Bill, which has now been given Royal Assent, will extend the powers of HM Revenue and Customs to tackle tax crime as well as enhance police ability to tackle credit card fraud, which forces many UK consumers to consider bankruptcy.
Also included in the new law are provisions for the merging of the Assets Recovery Agency with the Serious Organised Crime Agency. CIFAS, the UK`s Fraud Prevention Service, has welcomed the new proposals which, it says, will help in the battle against fraud.
Chief executive of CIFAS Peter Hurst said: "This is very good news for all those in fraud prevention and equally bad news for fraudsters. It is well-known that the same fraudsters who steal from the private sector also target the public sector."
CIFAS provides a range of fraud prevention services to the UK`s financial services companies, public authorities and other organisations.
