Bank stops overdraft charges

26/09/2007

A high street bank is to stop charging interest on overdrafts run up by its customers in an attempt to curb rising personal debts.

From October 22nd, Alliance and Leicester will drop all overdraft charges on current accounts and reduce the fee for a cheque bouncing from £34 to £25, the BBC reports.

The changes, which also include the introduction of a range of smaller daily fees, will help those using overdrafts to hold off bankruptcy proceedings. The bank has also pledged to keep free banking for all customers in credit.

Alliance and Leicester`s head of current accounts Andy Bayes said: "The combination of fees and interest is unnecessarily complex when you are trying to present your business as simple."

Formerly a building society, Alliance and Leicester floated on the stock market in 1997
