North Yorkshire sees `highest bankruptcy rise`
16/08/2007
Of all the regions in the UK, bankruptcy increased the most in North Yorkshire during the second quarter of 2007, figures from the Ministry of Justice reveal.
The data indicates that the number of people in that region who declared themselves bankrupt increased 19 per cent to reach 235, compared with 197 during the same period in 2006, the York Press reports.
However, the numbers showed that whether insolvencies rose or fell depended on the city. York, for example, experienced a four per cent drop, while Scarborough recorded a 98 per cent rise.
Across the UK, 13,923 people declared themselves bankrupt in the three months to June 2007, while the statistics reveal that an additional 10,838 chose individual voluntary arrangements.
"With average debt levels as high as this, five increases in interest rates in the last year and a further rise on the cards, the pressure on the over-indebted continues to increase," Paul Bateman, director of personal insolvencies in the north at KPMG, was quoted as saying.
Recently, Richard Sheppard, head of pensions at AWD Chase de Vere, said that the early part of the new year was a "peak time" for insolvencies.
