Consumers lying about finances

More than one-third of UK consumers have lied to a partner, friend or relation about the state of their finances, it has been revealed.

Research conducted by AXA suggests that one in three people questioned had been economical with the truth on the issue of money.

The insurer also states that, as the global economic downturn continues - potentially putting more people at risk of personal finance difficulties such as high level debt - more consumers may be tempted to lie.

Among the confessions offered by respondents was one by a woman who had neglected to tell her husband that she had invested in a firm which subsequently went bust.

Psychologist Andrew Kinder warned: "In the current climate, concealing expensive purchases or unwise investments from those closest to us is likely to exacerbate the problem."

Consumers facing bankruptcy may be among those keeping secrets about their finances.

Figures released recently by the Insolvency Service and cited by uSwitch suggested that almost 64,000 consumers have gone bankrupt over the past 12 months.
