Increase in bankruptcy figures for another CAB

In the latest in a string of local Citizens Advice Bureaux announcing record numbers of people wanting to declare bankruptcy, the Bury St Edmunds office has said it is struggling to cope with extra demand for its services.

According to the Bury Free Press, the local Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) has seen an increase in people seeking help recently.

"Normally, it slows down a bit over the summer, but this year our queues on a Monday morning are greater, if anything," said manager Jane Ballard.

While statistics from the Ministry of Justice indicate a fall in bankruptcy cases in other towns in the region, Bury saw a 60 per cent rise in the second quarter of 2008 compared with the same period of last year. A total of 91 bankruptcy cases were recorded for the town.

Across the first six months of this year, a 26 per cent rise was recorded on last year`s figures.

People experiencing debt problems may wish to look into other options besides a bankruptcy petition, for example an Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA).
